![Wooden bridge in town of Newry, a few miles north of Bethel, measures 87 feet in length and spans the Sunday River. Built in 1872, the structure was closed to vehicular traffic in 1958. It is known as the Artists Bridge for its reputation as the most-photographed, most-painted covered bridge in the entire state. ![Late-afternoon chowdown. Bestowing a love pat to one of the feasting Belties is a resident farmhand. The cows remain outdoors year-round, 24/7. At the age of about two years, the animals find their way to the butcher block. The farm also sells the meat itself. While I was there the sticker price for hamburger -- entirely grass-fed, if you please -- was $6.00 a pound. I refrained from indulging, not so much for the cost but because it meant I would have to cook a meal for myself. Sorry, not in Tom's gastronomic playbook. ![Had we known, we'd have bought along a Weed-Whacker. This stand is on Route One (a.k.a. the Coastal Highway) between Camden and Belfast. We searched in vain for a brochure. Probably temporarily out because of high demand for literature. We were disappointed, hoping that we could buy a norther counterpart to the bargain swampland property we purchased in Florida years ago. Still waiting for the market to rebound on that one.
