Entire gallery devoted to photos taken inside Eastern State Penitentiary, Philadelphia, in May 2012. Although closed in 1971 after decades of service, to this day the facility remains open to the public daily for self-guided tours. Cameras -- including flash and tripods -- are permitted. Eastern State is notable as the first pokey in which Al Capone served time (for evasion of federal taxes), the 1945 escape of notorious bank robber Willie Sutton (recaptured shortly after emerging from the tunnel he had laboriously dug), and the bloody riot of 1961 in which a number of inmates and guards were killed. The history is as fascinating as is the architecture. http://www.easternstate.org
