Road trip commenced on Sept. 3, 2014, departing from home in lafayette, ca (SF east bay), arriving at destination -- boston suburb of holliston -- on sept. 14. during visit of six weeks, added 3,300 miles to the 4,200 already accrued, traipsing about massachusetts, maine and, by dint of navigational error, vermont. (In a gesture toward sanity, i had car shipped back. ... and for half what it cost to drive across country.) on day one, I traversed 540 boring miles, to needles, by the time I arrived nine hours later, the mercury had dropped to a downright chilly 106. after overnighting at best western, I darted across state line into arizona, where i undertook a trek spanning what little remains of old route 66, which opened to traffic in 1926, linking chicago santa monica. today it has been supplanted almost entirely by interstate 40, whereupon it's harder to get one's kicks.
